In brief: St Helier is gearing up for a festive weekend on 20 and 21 November to mark the official start of Christmas, with lights switch-ons, a Santa parade, live music and family entertainment. The parish has also launched a new group to bring retailers and hospitality businesses together, with an eye on a full programme of events for 2027.
Lights, Parades and Late-Night Shopping
The Jersey Evening Post reports that St Helier will host two days of Christmas celebrations next month, timed to coincide with the start of late-night shopping in town. Local businesses have been encouraged to organise their own activities and special offers alongside the parish programme, making it a genuinely collaborative effort rather than a top-down affair.
Friday 20 November sets the tone with traditional Christmas activities, a Santa parade through the town centre, music in Parade Gardens and entertainment dotted throughout St Helier during the day, all building towards the main lights switch-on in the evening. Saturday 21 November then picks up the baton with live entertainment from lunchtime, pitched particularly at families and younger children.
Something for Everyone, Including the Often Overlooked
One of the more thoughtful additions to this year’s programme is a dedicated neurodiverse and sensory-friendly switch-on on the Saturday, designed for those who might find the noise, stimulation and crowds of the main Friday event difficult to manage. A separate “Tiny Tots” switch-on is also planned for Saturday, giving younger children their own moment in the spotlight without the bustle of the evening event.
St Helier Constable Inna Gardiner said: “Christmas is such an important time for St Helier and I feel very strongly that we should be doing everything we can to support our high street, our independent businesses, our restaurants and everyone who works so hard to make town special.” She added: “More than anything, I would encourage Islanders to support local this Christmas. Come into town, explore, shop, eat, drink and enjoy everything St Helier has to offer.”
A New Alliance for the Town Centre
Beyond the festive weekend itself, the parish has established a new group bringing together retailers, hospitality businesses and other organisations with a stake in the future of the town centre. According to the Jersey Evening Post, the first meetings have already revealed a clear appetite for collaborative working, and St Helier officials are now looking to build a programme of events for 2027 designed to draw more visitors and activity into town on a regular basis.
Precise timings for the parade and family events will be announced closer to the weekend, so islanders are advised to keep an eye out for further details.
