Jersey Bulls lose 34-match unbeaten run to last-gasp hat-trick

In brief: Jersey Bulls’ remarkable 34-match unbeaten run in the Isthmian League has come to an end after a dramatic 3-2 defeat away at Hartley Wintney. A stoppage-time hat-trick goal from Jonny Efedje broke Jersey hearts after the Bulls had appeared to salvage a draw in the 86th minute.

The Run Is Over

It had to end sometime, but that does not make it any easier to swallow. Jersey Bulls, the Isthmian League South Central leaders, suffered their first defeat since 30 December 2025, going down 3-2 at Hartley Wintney. The BBC reports that the run stretched across 33 unbeaten league games, plus a 0-0 draw in a play-off semi-final that was ultimately decided on penalties. Thirty-four matches without a defeat is the stuff of football legend, and the Bulls had every right to feel proud of it, right up until the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Manager Elliot Powell, fresh from winning manager of the month, will have been hoping to keep the momentum rolling. Instead, his side found themselves on the wrong end of a hat-trick performance from Hartley Wintney’s Jonny Efedje, whose three goals proved the difference on the night.

How It Unfolded

The Bulls got off to a rocky start, conceding in the 10th minute when their own Harry Curtis headed down a corner and Efedje blasted in from close range. Jersey rallied, with Sammy Henia-Kamau earning a penalty after his shot was blocked by a Hartley hand, and skipper James Queree stepped up to convert from the spot and level things at 1-1.

Top scorer Lorne Bickley then came close to putting the Bulls ahead, only for the home goalkeeper to produce a fine save from his header. It proved a costly miss. Just before the half-time whistle, Efedje struck again, his effort from a cross creeping in over the line after coming off the post to make it 2-1 to the hosts at the break.

The second half saw Jersey push hard for an equaliser. Fraser Barlow blasted an effort just over the bar, Henia-Kamau had a shot saved, and the Bulls continued to press. Their persistence appeared to have paid off in the 86th minute when Henia-Kamau’s shot was saved and Toby Ritzema reacted first to make it 2-2. The unbeaten run, it seemed, would survive another day.

It would not. Deep in stoppage time, Efedje found the net to complete his hat-trick and hand Hartley Wintney a famous victory. The Bulls’ extraordinary run was over.

Putting It in Context

For a club representing Jersey, Channel Islands, competing in the English football pyramid, a 34-match unbeaten run is a genuinely extraordinary achievement. The Bulls have consistently punched above their weight in the Isthmian League, and despite this defeat they remain leaders of the South Central division. One loss does not undo a season’s worth of exceptional form, and Powell’s side will have plenty of opportunities to respond.

The BBC also notes that the Bulls have recently celebrated a historic international call-up for midfielder Mohamed, another marker of the club’s growing profile and the quality of football being played on the island.
