In brief: Jersey Library will host a free ‘Connect Me’ event this Thursday to mark World Stroke Day, bringing together 21 local organisations to offer blood pressure checks and advice on stroke prevention and recovery. A panel featuring the Health Minister and people with lived experience of stroke will take questions from 1pm to 2pm, with places bookable via Eventbrite.

What’s On and When

If you have ever wondered whether your blood pressure is quietly plotting against you, this Thursday offers a chance to find out, free of charge. Jersey Library will host the ‘Connect Me’ event from 11am to 2.30pm, timed to coincide with World Stroke Day, the annual campaign raising awareness of stroke prevention, emergency symptoms and recovery.

Twenty-one local organisations will be under one roof, according to the Jersey Evening Post, including local charities, healthcare providers and government services. Attendees can pick up advice on topics ranging from neurological conditions and employment to quitting smoking, making it one of the more practically useful free events the island has seen in a while.

The event is open to everyone: people who have had a stroke, their families and carers, and anyone simply curious about keeping their brain in reasonable working order.

The Q&A Panel

The headline feature is a panel session running from 1pm to 2pm, bringing together the Health Minister, healthcare professionals and people who have lived through a stroke. The panel will cover prevention, recovery and life after a stroke, and attendees are invited to put their questions directly to the panel.

Places for the Q&A are limited, so the Jersey Evening Post advises reserving a spot through Eventbrite by searching for ‘World Stroke Day – Q&A panel’, organised by the Government of Jersey. The rest of the event, including the blood pressure checks and the information stands, requires no booking and is simply free to walk into.

Why It Matters

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability across the developed world, and awareness of the warning signs can be the difference between a full recovery and lasting harm. Events like this one, which bring clinical expertise and lived experience together in an accessible, no-appointment setting, tend to reach people who would never think to visit a GP just to ask a question.

For Jersey residents, having 21 organisations gathered in one place for a few hours is a genuine convenience. Whether you are a carer looking for support networks, someone who has already had a stroke and wants to understand their options, or simply a person who has been meaning to get their blood pressure checked since approximately 2019, Thursday’s event is a straightforward opportunity to act on it.
