In brief: Jersey Police ran a weekend crackdown on dangerous driving, deploying mobile speed cameras at multiple locations across the island. One man was arrested for drink-driving, while others faced parish hall referrals or speeding warnings.

The Weekend Sweep

Jersey Police officers took to the roads over the weekend armed with mobile speed cameras, targeting several locations including St John’s Village, Victoria Avenue and Westmount Road. The BBC reports that 17 people were ordered to attend parish hall hearings, six were warned for speeding, and a 33-year-old man was arrested for drink-driving following a crash on Saturday.

The force described the operation as a success, noting “really good engagement” from the public and saying that local residents were thankful for the intervention. Whether the residents of St John’s Village were quite so thankful as they watched their neighbours being pulled over is, of course, a matter of perspective.

A Camera With a Slow Start

The mobile speed camera used in the operation has had something of an unconventional debut. The BBC reports that the first such camera to operate in Jersey was unveiled during Road Safety Week in November last year. However, in September, police revealed that its use had led to zero prosecutions in the first nine months of operation.

That figure raised eyebrows at the time, and it is worth noting the distinction between prosecutions and the broader range of outcomes now being reported. Parish hall referrals and warnings sit outside the formal prosecution process, handled instead through Jersey’s traditional system of informal justice administered at parish level. It is a system that works rather differently from the mainland, and one that conservatives in Jersey have long valued for keeping minor matters out of the courts and within the community.

Drink-Driving and the Wider Picture

The arrest of a 33-year-old man for drink-driving following a crash is the most serious outcome from the weekend’s operation. The BBC does not name the individual, and no charges have been reported at this stage.

The crackdown reflects a broader push by Jersey Police to address road safety concerns that have been building for some time. Victoria Avenue, one of the locations targeted, has long been a flashpoint for speeding, given its long, relatively straight stretch along the island’s south coast. Westmount Road and St John’s Village present different challenges, with the latter being a residential area where speed limits and community safety are perennial concerns for local parishioners.

The combination of mobile cameras, visible police presence and parish hall referrals suggests the force is trying to use every tool available, not just the blunt instrument of formal prosecution. Whether that approach produces a lasting change in driver behaviour remains to be seen.
