In brief: A lorry-mounted crane overturned at the West Park apartment block in St Helier on Tuesday morning, injuring one person and prompting road closures on St Aubin’s Road. Emergency services and recovery teams, including additional cranes, attended the scene to manage the salvage operation.
Crane Topples at West Park
The incident occurred at around 9.15am on Tuesday at the apartment block at West Park, St Helier, where a lorry-mounted crane overturned on the sloping access road. The Jersey Evening Post reports that two people were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. One of them was taken to the Emergency Department at Jersey General Hospital as a precautionary measure, according to Jersey Fire and Rescue Service.
The BBC reports that a road was closed due to the risk of diesel spilling, and emergency services were at the scene. Jersey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that St Aubin’s Road was closed, with diversions put in place while the situation was safely managed. Additional cranes were brought to the site to assist in recovering the stricken vehicle.
Disruption to Traffic and Bus Services
The closure of St Aubin’s Road, one of the main arterial routes into St Helier from the west, caused significant disruption during the morning. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and follow diversion routes while emergency services and recovery teams dealt with the incident.
LibertyBus advised passengers that its services would be redirected to avoid the affected area. For commuters and residents relying on public transport along that corridor, the disruption added an unwelcome complication to the morning rush. The fire service indicated the road would remain closed while the incident was being safely managed.
