In brief: Direct flights between Jersey and Tenerife have launched under a new partnership between European airline airBaltic and C. I. Travel Group. The service runs during half term, the Christmas period through to the end of February, and over the Easter school holidays, using Airbus A220-300 aircraft fitted with Starlink Wi-Fi.
Sun, Sea and a Seat That Actually Fits
Jersey residents with an eye on escaping the Atlantic grey have a new option this winter. The Jersey Evening Post reports that C. I. Travel Group has partnered with airBaltic to operate a weekly programme of direct flights to Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands’ most popular destinations for British and Channel Islands holidaymakers.
The timing is well judged. Flights are scheduled during half term, from the Christmas period through to the end of February, and again over the Easter school holidays, covering precisely the windows when Jersey families are most likely to be looking for a warm-weather escape.
The aircraft being used is the Airbus A220-300, a modern narrowbody that airBaltic has made something of a signature. C. I. Travel Group director Alexander Devlin was keen to highlight its cabin credentials, noting that the A220-300’s five-seat rows offer wider seats than the six-seat configuration found on many other aircraft. For anyone who has spent time wedged into a standard short-haul seat, that is not a trivial point.
Wi-Fi at 35,000 Feet and No Missed Connections
The aircraft are also equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi, the satellite internet service developed by SpaceX. Devlin made a point of flagging this as a benefit, saying passengers can “stream and watch your favourite movies at 35,000 feet.” Whether that counts as a holiday amenity or a sign that none of us can switch off any more is a question for another day.
Beyond the in-flight comforts, Devlin made the practical case for direct services. “Direct flights also reduce the cost and time involved in reaching your destination, without the added risk of missing a connection,” he said. For an island community that has long relied on routing through London or other hubs to reach southern European destinations, that argument carries genuine weight. A missed connection in a busy hub airport is an experience that tends to linger in the memory, usually alongside a lukewarm airport sandwich and a very long queue.
The partnership operates under C. I. Travel Group’s FlyDirect brand, which has built a following among Jersey travellers seeking convenient, non-stop leisure routes from the island.
What It Means for Jersey Travellers
Tenerife is a well-established choice for Channel Islands holidaymakers, offering reliable winter sunshine, a range of accommodation options and direct access to the kind of warmth that Jersey’s own winters conspicuously fail to provide. The Canary Islands sit in a climatic sweet spot, warm enough in December and January to justify the trip, and close enough to make a week’s break practical.
The seasonal scheduling, covering school holidays and the deepest stretch of winter, suggests C. I. Travel Group has targeted the routes at family travellers and those seeking a mid-winter break rather than year-round leisure demand. Whether the partnership extends or expands will presumably depend on how well the seats fill during these initial rotations.
