Imperium promotes insider to lead its Jersey business

In brief: Imperium has promoted James Wileman to Managing Director of its Jersey business, stepping up from his previous role as Chief Operating Officer. Wileman brings 18 years of Jersey public sector experience alongside a background in fiduciary services, and will lead the firm’s strategic growth, people and client service.

A Familiar Face Steps Up

Imperium has announced the appointment of James Wileman as Managing Director of its Jersey operation, Channel Eye reports. Wileman is not an outside hire parachuted in from somewhere glamorous: he has been part of the Imperium Jersey team already, serving as Chief Operating Officer before taking on the top role.

His CV is, by any measure, a well-rounded one. Before moving into financial services, Wileman spent 18 years in senior positions within Jersey’s public sector, accumulating expertise in governance, risk and compliance. He subsequently made the transition into the island’s fiduciary sector, holding senior roles across operations, risk and compliance before joining Imperium. It is, in short, the kind of career path that suggests someone who knows where the bodies are buried, administratively speaking.

Five Years in Jersey, and Counting

The appointment coincides with two milestones for the firm. Imperium is marking five years of operating in Jersey and, simultaneously, celebrating 15 years as a group. David Gilmour, Imperium Group CEO, described the Jersey business as “an increasingly important part of the wider Imperium Group” and said the appointment “reflects our confidence in the opportunities ahead.”

Gilmour was unambiguous in his assessment of Wileman’s contribution so far: “James has already made a significant contribution to our Jersey business and I am delighted that he will now take on the role of Managing Director.” He highlighted Wileman’s “strong combination of leadership, operational expertise and an excellent understanding of Jersey’s financial services industry” as key factors in the decision.

For his part, Wileman struck a tone that balanced ambition with pragmatism. “Having recently celebrated five years in Jersey, there is a real sense of momentum within the business,” he said. “We have a strong platform from which to grow and I am looking forward to working with the team to build on what we have achieved so far.”

Independence as a Selling Point

Wileman was keen to flag what he sees as Imperium’s distinguishing characteristics in a competitive market. “Imperium’s independence, entrepreneurial approach and commitment to long-term relationships are important differentiators,” he said, adding that his priority would be to “build on those strengths, supporting our people and ensuring we continue to deliver the high levels of service our clients expect.”

In Jersey’s fiduciary and financial services landscape, where consolidation has been a persistent theme and larger groups have steadily absorbed smaller players, the emphasis on remaining independent is a deliberate positioning choice. It is the kind of message that resonates with clients who have watched their trusted advisers disappear into the maw of a global conglomerate, only to find themselves dealing with a call centre in another time zone.

As Managing Director, Wileman will carry responsibility for the Jersey business’s continued strategic growth, its people and its client service, according to the announcement.
