What a typical worker earns

The median is the middle earner: half earn more and half less. Over the 12 months to December 2025, median monthly pay was £3,680, taken from the payroll records of every employee. It is lower than the average (mean) because a minority of high earners pull the average up. The median public sector employee earned £4,780 a month, 56% more than the median in the private sector outside finance (£3,060).
