Jersey’s Roll of Honour displayed at Charing Cross this week

In brief: Jersey’s Roll of Honour has been unveiled at Charing Cross in St Helier, displaying the names of islanders who died in conflict on screens in the windows of the Santander Work Café. The display is part of a wider programme of Remembrance events across the island ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Names on the Glass

As the island prepares to mark Remembrance Sunday, the Roll of Honour has taken up a prominent position at Charing Cross in St Helier. The Times Jersey reports that the names of islanders who gave their lives in conflicts are being shown on screens in the windows of the Santander Work Café, offering a public and visible tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It is a fittingly modern way to honour an enduring tradition: names that deserve to be seen by as many people as possible, placed at one of the busiest junctions in the island’s capital. There is something quietly powerful about the everyday commuter or shopper pausing at a café window to read the names of those who never came home.

A Full Programme of Remembrance

The Roll of Honour display is just one part of Jersey’s broader schedule of commemorative events. Last weekend, the annual Field of Remembrance ceremony was held at the Cenotaph, where members of the public placed crosses in memory of those who died in service, continuing a tradition that connects generations of islanders to the cost of conflict.

The Poppy Shop has also opened at 36 King Street, St Helier, giving islanders the chance to purchase poppies and support the Royal British Legion’s appeal. For those who prefer to buy their poppy from a more distinctive source, Chelsea Pensioners are also on hand, selling poppies outside Marks and Spencer in King Street at various times throughout the week.

The Chelsea Pensioners are expected to return to Jersey for the Remembrance Sunday service itself, where they are also due to lay regimental wreaths at the Cenotaph, adding a ceremonial weight to proceedings that few other participants can match.
