Jersey Bulls Women climb to sixth with back-to-back league wins

In brief: Jersey Bulls Women have secured back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, beating Croydon 3-1 at Springfield. The result lifts the island side into sixth place in the South East Counties Women’s Football League Surrey Division One.

Bulls Make a Flying Start

It took Jersey Bulls Women just four minutes to open the scoring, the BBC reports, as Amy Guthrie’s long-range effort found the net after a goalkeeping error. The momentum did not let up: barely sixty seconds later, Sam Silva-Pinto reacted sharply to finish after Sofia Rodrigues’ shot had struck the crossbar, putting the hosts 2-0 up inside the opening five minutes.

That kind of start would settle the nerves of any side, and Springfield was clearly the place to be on Sunday afternoon. Two goals in the opening five minutes against a visiting team is the sort of performance that makes the long journey from Croydon feel considerably longer on the way home.

Croydon Hit Back Before Bulls Seal It

Croydon were not prepared to roll over quietly. Twelve minutes after the interval they pulled a goal back to set up a nervy final half-hour. The visitors, however, could not find an equaliser, and any lingering doubt was put to rest in the 87th minute when Poppy Mapplebeck struck an excellent long-range effort to make it 3-1 and seal the three points.

There was still time for a moment of drama in stoppage time, when Holly Sundby was fouled in the penalty area. Natasha Keen stepped up to take the spot-kick but dragged it wide, meaning the final score remained 3-1. A missed penalty matters little when the result is already secured, though Keen will no doubt be keen to put that one right next time out.

Moving Up the Table

The victory means Jersey Bulls Women have leapfrogged Croydon into sixth place in the South East Counties Women’s Football League Surrey Division One, according to the BBC. Crucially, it is the first time this season the side has strung together consecutive league wins, a milestone that will give the squad and their supporters genuine cause for optimism as the season progresses.

Competing on the mainland in a regional English league structure is no small undertaking for an island club, and back-to-back wins represent a meaningful step forward in what has clearly been a challenging campaign so far.
