In brief: Jersey’s cricket team have clinched the ICC Challenge League A title with three games still to play, after beating Kenya by 123 runs in Nairobi. A 133-run partnership between brothers Asa and Zak Tribe was the cornerstone of the victory, with Ben Ward’s five-wicket haul finishing the job.
Tribe Brothers Power Jersey to Title
It was a family affair in Nairobi on Sunday as Jersey’s cricketers sealed the ICC Challenge League A title in emphatic fashion. Batting first, the islanders were given a solid platform by opener Harrison Carlyon, who made 50, and Josh Lawrenson, who contributed 37. Both were dismissed by Kenya’s Francis Mutua, leaving Jersey at 97-2 after 13.2 overs, but what followed was the innings-defining moment of the match.
Glamorgan’s Asa Tribe and his brother Zak came together at the crease and proceeded to put on a 133-run third-wicket partnership spanning 22 overs. Zak, who had already announced himself in this tournament with a stunning 150 against Papua New Guinea on Thursday, was caught for 65 off 67 balls, having struck two sixes and five fours. His dismissal left Jersey well-placed at 230-3 with more than 14 overs remaining.
Asa continued to anchor the innings, making 72 off 86 balls before being trapped lbw by Sachin Gill, with Jersey on 267-5. Jonty Jenner chipped in with 26, Ben Ward added 19, and Charlie Brennan made 12 as the islanders posted a highly competitive 320-9 from their 59 overs. That is a total that tends to focus the mind of any opposition batting line-up.
Ward Rips Through Kenya’s Tail
Kenya’s reply never truly got going. Captain Dhiren Gondaria top-scored with 55, but the BBC reports that few of his teammates were able to offer meaningful support as wickets fell at regular intervals. Sachin Gill, who had earlier taken the wicket of Asa Tribe with the ball, made 60 with the bat, and a sixth-wicket stand of 61 between Gill and Sukhdeep Singh (31) gave Kenya a brief foothold at 152-6 after 31.4 overs. It proved to be their last meaningful resistance.
Ben Ward then tore through the lower order, finishing with figures of 5-28 as Kenya were bowled out for 197. Jersey’s winning margin of 123 runs was as convincing as it sounds.
What Comes Next
The title win, secured with three games still to play, leaves Jersey seven points clear of second-placed Kuwait. The islanders still face Kuwait on Tuesday, Denmark on Friday, and Qatar the following day, though those matches now carry the feel of a victory lap rather than a title decider.
More importantly, the BBC reports that Jersey will compete in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier play-off in Nepal in December as a result of their triumph. That is a significant achievement for a small island jurisdiction, and one that will give the squad something to look forward to as the Channel Islands head into winter.
