In brief: A Jersey islander has built a subscription app called PetMeds to help pet owners track and reorder their animals’ prescription medications. The idea grew from personal frustration managing his own dog’s complex daily medication regime, and two local vets are already on board.
A Problem Worth Solving
There is a particular kind of domestic chaos that only pet owners know: the moment you realise your animal’s medication has run out, the vet is closed, and the next delivery is a week away. Phil Le Cheminant knows it well. His six-year-old sheepadoodle, Henry, has inflammatory bowel disease and requires ten pills every day across four different medications, each with a different dosage and each arriving in packets or pill pots of different quantities. The result, as Bailiwick Express reports, is that they all run out at different times, and re-orders sometimes took more than a week to arrive, leaving Henry without the medication he needed.
Rather than simply grumbling about it, Le Cheminant did what any self-respecting app developer would do: he built a solution. The result is PetMeds, a subscription service designed to take the organisational burden off pet owners entirely.
How PetMeds Works
“The primary reason I built it was so I could be more organised,” Mr Le Cheminant told Bailiwick Express. “It tracks your usage, it lets you add lead time, which gives you plenty of time to have ordered it and to pick it up without running out.”
Owners enter their pet’s details, including species, breed, date of birth and microchip information, and can add a photograph to remove any ambiguity about which animal the vet is dispensing for. Photos of the medication itself can also be uploaded, appearing as thumbnails in the automatically generated order emails. “When the vet receives this email, they get a very clear overview of the pet and the owner,” Mr Le Cheminant explained.
The app sends notifications when a prescription is running low and can automatically fire off an order email to the vet on the owner’s behalf, without the user needing to lift a finger. Two Jersey practices, Village Vets and All Pets, are already preloaded into the platform and have agreed to accept these automatically sent emails.
A Local Solution for a Universal Frustration
What makes PetMeds notable is not just the technology but the straightforwardness of the problem it addresses. Managing multiple medications with different quantities and run-out dates is genuinely complicated, and the consequences of getting it wrong fall on an animal that has no say in the matter. For Jersey pet owners whose nearest alternative supplier may well be a ferry ride away, running out of a prescription medication is not a minor inconvenience.
The app’s integration with local vets from the outset also suggests Mr Le Cheminant has thought carefully about the Jersey context rather than simply launching a generic product and hoping for the best.
