Stranger punched five times at Jersey taxi rank gets probation

The Weighbridge taxi rank in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands, on a quiet evening.

In brief: A man has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service and nine months of probation after pleading guilty to punching another man five times at the Weighbridge taxi rank in August. The Magistrate’s Court heard the assault was entirely unprovoked, with CCTV capturing the incident in full.

What Happened at the Weighbridge

According to the Jersey Evening Post, the incident took place on 5 August at the Weighbridge taxi rank. Mark Edward Davis had been arguing with a man and a woman at the rank when he turned to a bystander and demanded: “What the f*** are you looking at?” When the man calmly questioned why Davis was being aggressive, Davis punched him five times in the face.

The victim attempted to walk away, but Davis followed him through the taxi rank towards Liberation Square, continuing to behave aggressively. The victim sustained bruising and swelling above his eye, as well as a small abrasion.

The Sentence

Davis pleaded guilty to common assault in the Magistrate’s Court this week. Magistrate David Cadin, presiding, described the footage as showing an “unprovoked assault” for which there was “no excuse.” Davis was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and placed on probation for nine months.

The court also heard that Davis had 25 hours remaining on an existing community-service order at the time of sentencing, meaning this was not his first encounter with the justice system.
