In brief: Warwick Long, CEO of HSBC Channel Islands and Isle of Man, is running the New York Marathon in November to raise funds for the Jersey Child Care Trust. It will be his third New York Marathon and sixth marathon overall, following previous runs in 2006 and 2016 in New York, as well as Paris and Lake Maggiore in Italy.

Going the Extra Mile, Literally

Channel Eye reports that Warwick Long, the chief executive of HSBC Channel Islands and Isle of Man, will be pounding 26.2 miles through the streets of New York this November, all in aid of the Jersey Child Care Trust (JCCT). This is not a man who does things by halves: the upcoming race will be his sixth marathon, having previously conquered New York twice, Paris, and a scenic run at Lake Maggiore in Italy.

Long has been a supporter of the JCCT for a number of years through his role at HSBC, backing various fundraising initiatives and championing the charity within the local community. This time, however, he is putting his own legs where his support has long been.

What the Funds Will Support

The money raised through Long’s marathon effort will go towards the JCCT’s work supporting children and families in Jersey facing challenges including poverty, disability and additional needs. The charity’s focus is on early intervention, giving children the best possible start in life and helping them thrive throughout childhood.

Fiona Vacher, CEO of the Jersey Child Care Trust, was effusive in her thanks. “We are incredibly grateful to Warwick for taking on this challenge in support of JCCT,” she said. “He has been a longstanding friend of the charity and it is wonderful to see him once again going the extra mile for Jersey’s children and families. Every donation will help us continue providing support, opportunities and early intervention for children who are facing significant challenges. When children receive the right support at the right time, it can make a lifelong difference and Warwick’s efforts will help ensure more children get that chance.”

The Man Behind the Miles

Long himself is clear-eyed about what lies ahead. “A marathon is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one,” he said, “but raising funds for the Jersey Child Care Trust gives this run a very special purpose. Supporting children and families in our local community matters greatly to me, and JCCT makes a real difference to people’s lives. I’m proud to support the charity and help ensure children get the opportunity to flourish.”

With his previous New York outings coming in 2006 and 2016, Long is returning to the city’s famous course a decade on from his last appearance there, bringing with him considerably more marathon experience and, one imagines, a rather better sense of what miles 20 to 26 feel like.
