# Former Victoria College student named as Blue Peter’s 45th presenter

**In brief:** Leo Olsson, a former Victoria College student from Jersey, has been named as the 45th presenter of Blue Peter, the world’s longest-running children’s television programme. He will make his debut on CBBC and BBC iPlayer on 20 November, earning his Blue Peter badge during a formation skydive from 15,000 feet.

## Jersey Boy Makes Television History

It is not every day that a small island produces a presenter for one of Britain’s most iconic television institutions, but Jersey has done exactly that. Leo Olsson, a content creator who grew up in the island and attended Victoria College, has been announced as the newest face of Blue Peter, joining existing presenters Abby Cook and Shini Muthukrishnan, Bailiwick Express reports.

Olsson’s path to the role is, to put it mildly, unconventional. He began making tech-review videos at the age of 12, which is the sort of thing most parents assume will amount to nothing beyond a cluttered bedroom and an eye-watering electricity bill. In his case, it turned out to be the foundation of a media career. He later made headlines by writing to 200 world leaders requesting their best life advice, sharing the responses online to encourage others to pursue their ambitions. From there, he committed to becoming a filmmaker and built a following through his “world’s longest bucket list” project, documenting personal challenges including running a marathon, learning the piano, riding a unicycle and building a surfboard from scratch.

Those efforts have attracted more than 13 million likes and over 454,000 followers across social media platforms. Not bad for a lad from Jersey.

## A Debut to Remember

Olsson’s first episode airs at 5pm on Friday 20 November on CBBC and BBC iPlayer, and the producers have clearly decided that a gentle introduction was not on the agenda. He will take part in a formation skydive and receive his Blue Peter badge 4,000 feet above the ground, which is, by any measure, a more dramatic start to a new job than most of us manage.

Olsson cited former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton, known for her own daredevil challenges, as one of the people who inspired him growing up. He said: “Blue Peter has always stood for adventure and not being afraid to try new things, which are values I try to bring to everything I create.” He added that he wants “to let kids know that you can go out and do whatever you want to do, take on a challenge, big or small.”

Sarah Muller, the BBC’s Senior Head of Children’s Commissioning, described Olsson as “a natural storyteller whose creativity, positivity and sense of adventure make him a perfect fit for Blue Peter.”

## What It Means for Jersey

For an island of roughly 100,000 people, Jersey punches well above its weight in producing individuals who make a mark on the wider world, and Olsson’s appointment is a fine addition to that tradition. Victoria College, his former school, will no doubt be updating its list of notable alumni with some enthusiasm.

For younger islanders watching at home, there is something genuinely encouraging about seeing someone from their own community reach a programme with the cultural footprint of Blue Peter. The show has been running since 1958 and has launched the careers of numerous well-known broadcasters. Olsson becomes the 45th presenter in that lineage, which is a remarkable distinction for someone who started out reviewing gadgets in his bedroom in Jersey.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something rather heartening about a story that requires no cynicism whatsoever. A young man from Jersey starts making videos as a child, writes to world leaders on a whim, builds a surfboard, and ends up parachuting onto one of the BBC’s most beloved programmes. If that is not a sufficiently compelling argument for encouraging children to pursue their interests rather than staring blankly at a curriculum, it is hard to know what is.

Blue Peter has survived decades of television upheaval, the internet, streaming, and the general collapse of the attention span, and it is still here, still handing out badges, still finding presenters willing to jump out of aeroplanes. Jersey should be proud. Leo Olsson clearly is.
