# Jersey trio launches Springtide to help small bookkeepers compete

**In brief:** Three local professionals have launched Springtide, a new bookkeeping group serving smaller firms across the Channel Islands and the UK. The group aims to pool technology, software licences and industry expertise that independent practices might struggle to access alone. TCS and EPOS.gg are already part of the new group.

## A New Force in Channel Islands Bookkeeping

The bookkeeping world is changing fast, and not everyone is keeping up. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how the numbers get crunched, software costs are climbing, and clients increasingly expect their bookkeeper to do rather more than balance the books. For smaller practices, that combination of pressures can be genuinely difficult to navigate. Enter Springtide, a newly established group designed to give independent bookkeeping firms a fighting chance.

Channel Eye reports that Springtide has been founded by three local professionals in direct response to shifts in the industry, including the growing use of technology and rising client demand for a broader range of services. The group will be led by Tim Chilestone and Millie Goubert, with Sam McCarthy serving as non-executive director. TCS and EPOS.gg have already joined the Springtide group, with Chilestone continuing his existing roles at both firms alongside his new responsibilities.

## Sharing Resources, Retaining Independence

The core proposition is straightforward: smaller practices gain access to shared technology, software licences, professional expertise and industry connections that would otherwise be difficult or costly to obtain on their own, while keeping the independence and personal service that sets them apart from larger competitors.

The group also plans to encourage collaboration and referrals between member firms, meaning a small practice that cannot currently offer a particular service can point its clients in the right direction within the network rather than simply turning them away.

Tim Chilestone, Director at TCS, explained the thinking behind the venture. “We’ve heard from talented smaller firms that have to say no to clients because they can’t offer everything their clients need under one roof,” he told Channel Eye. “At the same time, the cost and pace of technology can make it difficult for a small practice to keep up.”

On the question of artificial intelligence, Chilestone was measured rather than evangelical. “AI is changing the way bookkeeping is done, and smaller firms shouldn’t be left behind,” he said. “For us, it isn’t about replacing people. It’s about using the right technology to handle time-consuming tasks, so teams can spend more time where it matters most: with their clients.”

## What This Means for Jersey’s Business Community

Jersey’s economy is built substantially on small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which rely on local bookkeepers and accountants to keep their finances in order. The island’s professional services sector is well established at the larger end, but the smaller independent practices that serve local retailers, hospitality businesses, tradespeople and sole traders have historically had to make do with whatever they could afford individually.

A group model that lowers the barrier to better technology and broader expertise could have a genuinely practical benefit for those clients. If their bookkeeper can now offer more services without referring them elsewhere, that is one less complication in the day-to-day running of a small business. The extension of the model to the wider UK market also suggests the founders see a scalable opportunity beyond the islands, which is encouraging for the long-term viability of the venture.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly refreshing about a business story that does not involve a government grant, a States debate or a lengthy consultation process. Three local professionals spotted a gap, pooled their experience and got on with it. No task force required.

The pitch that AI should free up people to spend more time with clients rather than replace them is one that will resonate with anyone who has watched technology used as an excuse to hollow out a workforce. Whether Springtide can deliver on that promise as it grows will be the real test. For now, it looks like a sensible idea, well timed, and built by people who clearly know their industry. Jersey’s small business community will be watching with interest.
