# Pirates, paintings and a coastal 10k: Jersey’s packed weekend

**In brief:** Jersey has a packed cultural weekend ahead, with a flute-and-saxophone performance at Grève de Lecq Barracks, Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas at Jersey College for Girls, a coastal 10k run from Gorey, and a free painting exhibition in St Helier. There is something for almost every taste, and most of it will cost you very little.

## Music, Movement and Maritime Drama

Jersey-based artist Jennah Smart takes to the stage this Saturday at ArtHouse Jersey’s studios at Grève de Lecq Barracks, blending flute, saxophone, electronics, multi-track recordings, improvisation and spoken word in a performance of her original work. Bailiwick Express reports that the programme draws on Jersey’s natural landscape, exploring the history and memories that shape island life. Doors open at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. Attendees are asked to bring their own drinks, and free parking is available outside the Seaside Café.

For those who prefer their culture at a brisker pace, Jersey Spartan Athletics Club’s Autumn 10k takes place this Sunday, 18 October, from 9am to 11am. The out-and-back course starts near the Old Bank Hotel in Gorey Village, heads uphill and along the Coast Road to St Catherine’s, then returns. Entry costs £5 for non-members and is free for Spartans members. Runners should check in at Longbeach car park between 8.30am and 8.50am.

## Gilbert and Sullivan Come to Jersey College for Girls

Two of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best-known comic operas are being staged at Jersey College for Girls as part of a festival organised by Jersey’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Bailiwick Express reports that the programme opened with *HMS Pinafore*, followed by *The Pirates of Penzance*, with the productions presented in association with Jersey Arts Centre. Performers from the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company take the principal roles.

On Sunday, experts from the UK will give a talk about the theatrical duo. Tickets cost £30 per performance and £10 for the talk, with discounts available for those attending multiple events. Bookings can be made through the Jersey Arts Centre website.

If you have never experienced the particular joy of watching a room full of people sing about a very model of a modern Major-General, this is your moment.

## Eutopia: Fifty Paintings in St Helier

Jersey artist Jason Butler has opened his latest exhibition, *Eutopia*, at his studio at 10 Commercial Buildings in St Helier. More than 50 paintings feature in the show, spanning a range of sizes and subjects. Bailiwick Express describes the works as depicting solitary figures in ambiguous settings, inviting visitors to pause, reflect and form their own interpretations. The exhibition is free to visit and open daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

## The NSFW Perspective

It is genuinely heartening to see Jersey’s cultural calendar this full. A locally rooted musical performance inspired by the island’s own landscape, a proper amateur operatic society bringing in professional talent, a free art exhibition open every day, and a community athletics event that costs less than a cup of coffee. None of this requires a government strategy document, a steering group or a six-figure consultancy fee. It just requires people who love what they do, getting on and doing it. More of this, please.
