# Nationwide lifts savings rates but over 5% deals are out there

**In brief:** Nationwide has announced interest rate increases across nine savings accounts and ISAs, following the Bank of England’s base rate rise. The new rates come into effect on 1 December. Savers can find rates above 5 per cent elsewhere, though the small print matters.

## Nationwide moves on savings rates

Nationwide is raising interest rates across nine of its savings accounts and ISAs, with the changes taking effect on 1 December, AOL reports. Among the products being repriced is the building society’s Triple Access Saver, which the Times reports will offer a rate of 3.55 per cent.

The moves follow the Bank of England’s latest base rate rise, which has prompted lenders and savings providers to revisit what they offer depositors. Nationwide, as one of the UK’s largest savings institutions, is among the first to announce a broad sweep of changes across its product range.

## The wider picture for savers

While Nationwide’s headline Triple Access Saver rate of 3.55 per cent is a step in the right direction, the Times notes that rates of more than 5 per cent are available elsewhere. As ever, the advice is to check the terms and conditions carefully: introductory bonuses, withdrawal restrictions and minimum deposit requirements can all affect the real-world value of any account.

For Jersey residents, the picture is broadly similar to that in the UK. Islanders with savings held at Nationwide or other UK-linked institutions will benefit from the same rate increases, and those shopping around for the best deal would do well to compare the full range of options available to them, bearing in mind that not every UK-based product is accessible from the Channel Islands.

## The NSFW Perspective

It is, of course, a welcome change to be writing about savings rates going up rather than down. For years, the diligent saver was rewarded with returns that barely covered the cost of the envelope their statement arrived in. Now, with rates above 5 per cent available if you know where to look, there is at least some incentive to put money aside rather than spend it before inflation eats it.

The catch, naturally, is in those terms and conditions. “Triple Access” sounds generous until you discover that exceeding your permitted withdrawals can collapse your rate faster than a soufflé in a draught. Jersey savers in particular should double-check which products are actually available to Channel Islands residents before getting too excited. Still, on balance, this is good news, and good news deserves to be acknowledged.
