# New La Pouquelaye leak unrelated to last year’s sinkhole, says Jersey Water

**In brief:** Jersey Water has confirmed that a new leak at La Pouquelaye, in the Rouge Bouillon area of St Helier, is unrelated to the major sinkhole that closed the road for nearly five months last year. Diversions are in place and buses are being rerouted, with the utility promising to reopen the road as quickly as possible.

## Another Day, Another Hole in Rouge Bouillon

Islanders who remember the long, frustrating closure of Rouge Bouillon last winter will be forgiven for a sharp intake of breath at the news. Jersey Water has detected a new leak in the La Pouquelaye area and, as Bailiwick Express reports, has moved swiftly to reassure the public that this incident has nothing to do with the sinkhole that swallowed the road’s good reputation back in December 2024.

That earlier drama began on 18 December 2024, when a burst water main caused a severe sinkhole, shutting Rouge Bouillon entirely. The road did not reopen until 12 May 2025, a closure lasting nearly five months and causing considerable disruption to commuters, residents and businesses in the area.

This time around, Jersey Water says signposted diversions would be in place for most of the day, and motorists are being advised to avoid the area during rush hour where possible. The Parish of St Helier has shared diversion information on social media.

## Full Inspection Ordered Because of “Ground Conditions”

While the company is clear that the two incidents are unconnected, it is not taking any chances. Jersey Water says it is carrying out a full inspection and excavation at the site, citing the “ground conditions” and the “disruption caused last time” as the reasons for the more thorough approach. In other words, once bitten, twice shy, and quite right too.

Nearby properties “shouldn’t” experience problems with their water supply, according to Jersey Water, though anyone who does notice an issue is encouraged to contact the company’s customer services team on 01534 707300. The company added: “We’re really sorry for the inconvenience this is likely to cause and we appreciate you bearing with us while we get this fixed.”

Bus passengers are also affected, with services being diverted. LibertyBus passengers are advised to check with the operator before travelling.

## What Islanders Should Do

- Avoid the La Pouquelaye and Rouge Bouillon area during rush hour where possible.

- Follow signposted diversions.

- Check the Parish of St Helier’s social media for diversion details.

- LibertyBus passengers should check with the operator before travelling.

- Anyone experiencing water supply issues should call Jersey Water on 01534 707300.

- Follow Jersey Water’s social media for updates on when the road will reopen.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something almost poetic about Rouge Bouillon making the news again so soon after its lengthy cameo as Jersey’s most inconvenient road closure. Jersey Water deserves credit for getting ahead of the story quickly, offering reassurance and an apology before the rumour mill could crank into full gear. The decision to conduct a full excavation and inspection, given what happened last time, is exactly the kind of cautious, sensible approach that residents will appreciate. Whether the ground beneath La Pouquelaye is simply having a difficult year, or whether there are deeper questions to be asked about ageing infrastructure across the island, is a matter worth watching. For now, though, the advice is simple: take the long way round, and perhaps pack a flask.
