# Jersey sweeps Guernsey 7-0 as junior basketball numbers soar

**In brief:** Jersey basketball is on a high after a 7-0 clean sweep against Guernsey in this year’s inter-insular contests, with the men ending a 14-year wait for victory and the women winning for the first time in 27 years. Junior participation has surged to more than 250 signed-up players, and a new outdoor court is set to open in memory of a much-loved figure in the island’s basketball community.

## A Clean Sweep and a Long Time Coming

It is not often that a sports association can point to a perfect record and say, with a straight face, that the results are almost the least interesting thing happening. Yet that is precisely the position Jersey basketball finds itself in. The Jersey Basketball Association (JBBA) completed a 7-0 clean sweep in this year’s inter-insular contests against Guernsey, a result that carries particular emotional weight on both sides of the gender divide.

The men’s team ended a 14-year wait for inter-insular victory, while the women claimed their first win in 27 years. Those are not the kind of droughts you forget in a hurry, and the celebrations were presumably proportionate. The men also secured bronze at the Island Games held in Ynys Môn, adding further silverware to what has been a landmark year for the sport on the island.

## From 15 Kids to 250 Juniors

Behind the on-court success lies a development story that is arguably even more compelling. Callum Gilmour, the JBBA’s Development Officer and a men’s first-team player, spoke to Bailiwick Express Sports Reporter Archie Corbett on the Bailiwick Sports Podcast, and the numbers he cited are striking.

“When I started, we had two sessions and 15 kids in each session, and that was it. We now have over 250 juniors signed up,” Gilmour said. That is a transformation by any measure, and it suggests that whatever the JBBA has been doing at grassroots level, it is working. Gilmour is clear that the current moment demands ambition: “Participation is at such a high, that this is the time where we need to make changes, keep growing and keep building as a sport.”

The podcast also covers the growth of the women’s game, wheelchair basketball and inclusion initiatives, as well as the funding helping Jersey athletes prepare for next summer’s Island Games in the Faroe Islands.

## The G Court: More Than Just a Basketball Court

Perhaps the most poignant development on the horizon is the forthcoming opening of the G Court, a new facility that carries deep personal significance for the basketball community. The project is named in memory of Guillaume Hoareau, a prominent figure in Jersey basketball who passed away in May 2024.

Gilmour was candid about what the opening will mean. “For the basketball community this is more than opening a court, this is remembering someone who was such a big part of Jersey Basketball,” he said. It is the kind of tribute that transforms a piece of tarmac and a couple of hoops into something genuinely meaningful, and it speaks well of a community that has chosen to channel grief into something lasting and useful.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly refreshing about a sports story that does not involve a governance scandal, a stadium funding black hole, or a row about naming rights. Jersey basketball has simply got on with it: grown its junior base dramatically, beaten Guernsey comprehensively, and found a dignified way to honour one of its own. With the Island Games heading to the Faroe Islands next summer, the momentum could hardly be better timed. One suspects Guillaume Hoareau would have approved.
