# Jersey surfer pipped by two seconds in European top ten

**In brief:** Eleven young Jersey surfers represented the Channel Islands at Eurosurf Junior 2026 in Bundoran, Ireland, with three finishing in the top ten of their respective disciplines. The Channel Islands team placed ninth overall in a competition the European Surfing Federation called the finest it has ever organised.

## Jersey’s Young Guns Make Waves in Ireland

Bundoran, on Ireland’s wild Atlantic coast, has long been known as the Surf Capital of Ireland, and it lived up to every syllable of that title last week. Two-metre-plus sets, reef breaks and 250 competitors from 20 countries: this was Eurosurf Junior 2026, and Jersey’s finest young surfers were right in the thick of it.

Representing the Channel Islands, all 11 Jersey athletes not only competed but, in the words of Channel Islands coach Max Bennett, thrived in conditions that proved “eye-opening” for some. The European Surfing Federation itself declared it “undoubtedly the finest competition” it has ever organised, a verdict that gives the Jersey contingent’s ninth-place overall finish a rather satisfying weight.

Bennett was effusive about the experience: “Bundoran definitely had one of the better swells and higher standard of surfing that I’ve seen in a contest. It was great to see 250 competitors from 20 countries out there in the surf. Seeing our juniors compete was just brilliant. These events are so important in development and you learn so much.”

## Drama, Determination and a Last-Second Heartbreak

The standout narrative of the competition belonged to Aleksander Blampied in the Under-16 Boys shortboard. After narrowly falling short in the first round, Blampied fought his way through the repêchage rounds all the way to round six, a remarkable run in a field packed with World Games performers, WSL Pro Junior athletes and national champions.

Round six delivered the kind of finish that makes surfing so compelling and so cruel. Blampied rocketed to first place after posting a score of 7.07, only for Switzerland’s Matias Bento to leapfrog him just two seconds before the buzzer. He finished ninth in Europe and was the last remaining Under-16 Boy from the home nations still standing.

“To finish ninth in Europe and be the last remaining U16 Boy from the home nations is something I didn’t believe would be possible,” Blampied said. “My performances in this competition have proved that I can hold my own at this level, only boosting my confidence for future events. I think I proved that hard work pays off and, with resilience, determination and belief, anything is possible.”

Blampied credited coach Max Bennett and team manager Dan Harris for keeping him “calm, focused and in the zone,” and expressed gratitude to the Jersey Sport Performance Sport Programme and his sponsors, Madhatter and Hapi.

## Longboard Surprises and a Team Built for the Future

The top-ten finishes did not stop with Blampied. Arran Hunt, competing in his final year in the Longboard Under-18 Boys category, showed what the Jersey Evening Post describes as “a level head” to reach repêchage three and finish sixth in the repêchage. Meanwhile, Rebecca Lynam, who is not primarily a longboarder, stepped up selflessly into the Longboard Under-18 Girls event to help the Channel Islands accumulate as many points as possible. She exceeded all expectations, making it to repêchage two and securing a top-ten finish in the repêchage.

The full Channel Islands team comprised Albie Gould, Aleksander Blampied, Arran Hunt, Cayden Bell, Daisy Heddercott, Jake Le Quesne, Jesse Heddercott, Luca Sebastianelli, Maisie Le Moignan, Nava Dowse-Harris and Rebecca Lynam. The team thanked sponsors Broadlands, The Surfyard and El Tico, along with the Jersey Sport Travel Grant and the organisational efforts of Michelle Dawson, Katherine Heddercott and Jodie Lynam.

Bennett was clear-eyed about what the results mean for the island’s surfing future: “The results are a great sign for the future. It shows that all our plans with development have paid off. We just need to keep it moving in the right direction.”

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly brilliant about a small island in the English Channel sending eleven teenagers to one of Europe’s premier junior surfing competitions, competing against 20 nations, and coming home with three top-ten finishes and a ninth-place overall. Jersey punches above its weight in finance, in law, and apparently, in the water. Aleks Blampied losing a heat by two seconds to a Swiss surfer, of all people, is the sort of detail that belongs in a sports film nobody would believe. The Channel Islands surfing scene is clearly building something real, and on the evidence from Bundoran, the waves ahead look very promising indeed.
