# 150 Jersey pupils to help shape the Island’s education future

**In brief:** Around 150 newly elected school council representatives from across Jersey will gather on Tuesday 14 October to discuss the future of education on the Island. Pupils will hear how their previous feedback has shaped Jersey’s developing Education Vision, and take part in a journalism workshop run by the JEP Junior editorial team.

## Pupils Take the Floor on Jersey’s Education Future

It is not every day that 150 young people get a formal seat at the table, but that is precisely what is happening next week when Jersey’s School Council Network holds its next meeting. Bailiwick Express reports that newly elected school council representatives from primary and secondary schools across the Island will convene on Tuesday 14 October to share their views on education and hear how their earlier contributions have already influenced policy.

The event gives pupils the chance to engage with the Island’s developing Education Vision, a framework that officials say has been shaped, at least in part, by feedback gathered from children and young people themselves. Whether that influence runs deep or amounts to a well-meaning consultation exercise will, no doubt, become clearer as the Vision takes its final form.

## New Faces and Fresh Research

The meeting will also serve as an introduction to four newly appointed Partnership Leads who will be working with schools across Jersey: John Baudains, Jo Terry-Marchant, Vicki Charlesworth and Jo Pearce. Mr Baudains is set to provide an update on the Education Vision and explain how pupil feedback has fed into its development.

Ms Charlesworth will present recent research into reading for pleasure in Jersey, and pupils will be asked to consider the findings and discuss practical ways in which reading could be encouraged and supported across the Island. It is a topic that tends to divide opinion among young people, though the research itself may offer some useful pointers for schools looking to foster a genuine love of books rather than a grudging relationship with the school reading list.

## A Journalism Workshop in the Mix

Perhaps the most eye-catching element of the day is a journalism workshop delivered by members of the JEP Junior editorial team. Students will learn how to write a news story, explore the issues that matter most to young people, and find out how they can submit their own stories to JEP Junior. Given that the next generation of journalists will be covering Jersey’s affairs for decades to come, it seems a worthwhile investment of an afternoon.

Education Minister Catherine Curtis offered her congratulations to the newly elected representatives, saying: “Being chosen by your peers is a real achievement and reflects the confidence they have in your ability to speak up on behalf of others.” She added that school councils “play a vital role in ensuring that children’s and young people’s voices are heard and taken into account” and expressed particular pleasure that pupils would have the chance to see how their contributions had helped shape the Education Vision.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something genuinely encouraging about giving young people a structured forum in which their views are not merely collected and filed away, but demonstrably acted upon. The proof, of course, will be in the pudding: if the Education Vision that eventually emerges bears a meaningful resemblance to what Jersey’s pupils have actually asked for, then this process will have been worth far more than a Tuesday afternoon away from the classroom. If it turns out to be a glossy document that politely acknowledges youth input before proceeding as planned, well, that would be a rather familiar story. For now, though, the initiative deserves a fair hearing, and 150 young Islanders deserve credit for putting their hands up to represent their peers.
