# Jersey hopes to gain new Royal Navy warship affiliation

**In brief:** Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor, Vice-Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, has expressed hope that the island will be affiliated with a new Royal Navy warship following the retirement of HMS Iron Duke. The Type 23 frigate, which had been affiliated with Jersey since 2010, was retired earlier this year alongside two other vessels as the Navy reinvests in next-generation ships.

## End of an Era for HMS Iron Duke

HMS Iron Duke served as Jersey’s affiliated Royal Navy warship for many years, visiting the island on a number of occasions and embodying the deep maritime bond between the Bailiwick and the Senior Service. That chapter closed earlier this year when the Royal Navy announced the frigate’s retirement from active service.

HMS Iron Duke was not alone in being stood down. The Navy confirmed in July that HMS Richmond and HMS Chiddingfold were also leaving service at the same time. The reasoning was straightforward, if not entirely painless: the cost and risk of maintaining ageing Type 23 frigates was rising, and the money is better spent elsewhere. As the Royal Navy’s announcement put it, “retiring them now allows reinvestment in the next generation of Type 26 and Type 31 frigates and advanced autonomous capabilities.”

It is, in short, the kind of hard-headed defence logic that tends to make perfect sense on a spreadsheet and feels rather more bittersweet when you have watched a warship sail into St Helier Harbour.

## Lieutenant-Governor Looks to the Future

Vice-Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd, KBE, Jersey’s Lieutenant-Governor, acknowledged the island’s pride in its long association with the frigate and expressed optimism that the connection with the Royal Navy would continue through a new affiliation.

“Jersey has been exceptionally proud to have had the frigate, HMS Iron Duke, as our affiliated warship for so many years,” Sir Jerry said. He went on to note that “as an island, we have a deep connection with the sea and the importance of our relationship with the Royal Navy is centuries old.”

Crucially, Sir Jerry did not leave matters there. “We have thoroughly enjoyed Iron Duke’s many visits to the Bailiwick,” he added, “and we sincerely hope that another warship will be formally affiliated to our island in due course.”

The phrase “in due course” is doing some diplomatic heavy lifting there, but the sentiment is clear: Jersey intends to maintain its place in the Royal Navy’s family of affiliated communities, and the Lieutenant-Governor, himself a Vice-Admiral, is well placed to make that case.

## Why It Matters to Jersey

Jersey’s relationship with the Royal Navy is not merely ceremonial window-dressing. The island’s history is inseparable from the sea, from centuries of maritime trade and fishing to its strategic position in the English Channel. A formal warship affiliation keeps that connection alive in a tangible way, providing islanders with a direct link to the men and women serving in the fleet and giving the Navy a community anchor in the Channel Islands.

The transition to Type 26 and Type 31 frigates represents a significant modernisation of the Royal Navy’s surface fleet. Whether one of those new vessels will eventually carry a formal tie to Jersey remains to be seen, but with the Lieutenant-Governor actively voicing the island’s hopes, the case is clearly being made at the right level.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly reassuring about the fact that, in an age of drone warfare and cyber threats, Jersey still cares deeply about which warship flies its colours. The island’s maritime identity is not a heritage exhibit, it is a living part of who Jerseyans are. Vice-Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd is precisely the sort of Lieutenant-Governor you want making the case for a new affiliation: a man who knows his way around a quarterdeck and understands that these symbolic ties carry real weight. One suspects the Royal Navy will not keep Jersey waiting too long. After all, you do not let a centuries-old friendship lapse over a bit of a refit schedule.
