# Jersey karate squad bags 35 medals and a trophy at Athens Europeans

**In brief:** A ten-strong Jersey Kenpo Karate Association squad returned from the European Championships in Athens with 35 medals, including seven golds, and a special trophy for the most medals relative to team size. Nine of the ten competitors reached the podium, with the youngest aged just eight. Chief instructor Roy MacDonald BEM led an adult seminar and the Black Belt Master Class at the event.

## Small Island, Big Haul

Jersey’s young martial artists have come home from Athens with hardware that would make a much larger nation proud. The Jersey Kenpo Karate Association sent ten competitors to the International Kenpo Karate Association (IKKA) Europe European Championships, held at the Peristeri Olympic Boxing Centre from 8 to 11 October, and they returned with seven gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze medals, totalling 35 in all.

Nine of the ten squad members reached the podium, Bailiwick Express reports, with the team’s youngest competitors aged just eight. As if the medal count were not enough, the squad also received a trophy recognising their outstanding haul relative to the size of their team. The award came as something of a surprise: the Jersey competitors had already left the venue when it was announced, so Andrea Albert, mother of competitor Tim Albert, collected the trophy on the club’s behalf.

## The Stars of the Mat

Leading the individual tally was nine-year-old Tobias Puttick Barrett, who claimed four gold medals across Creative Forms, Weapon Kata, Point Sparring and Team Sparring, plus a silver in Self Defence. Eight-year-old Iason Milosev was not far behind, taking gold in Creative Forms and Self Defence alongside silver in Point Sparring.

Ten-year-old Zack Moon demonstrated remarkable consistency, medalling in all six of his events: silver in Individual Kenpo Forms and Team Sparring, and bronze in Self Defence, Creative Forms, Weapon Kata and Point Sparring. Twelve-year-old Alice Wesolowski collected five medals, with silver in Self Defence, Creative Forms, Weapon Kata and Point Sparring, plus bronze in Individual Kenpo Forms.

Alexander Austick, 11, added gold in Self Defence, silver in Team Sparring and bronze in Point Sparring. Nine-year-old Noah Aubert secured silver in Weapon Kata and Self Defence alongside bronze in Individual Kenpo Forms, while eight-year-old James Wesolowski took silver in Self Defence and bronze in Individual Kenpo Forms and Point Sparring.

The club’s two 16-year-old black belts, Tim Albert and Adelin Puican, contributed a further seven medals between them. Albert won silver in Team Sparring and bronze in Creative Forms, Weapon Kata and Point Sparring, while Puican took silver in Team Sparring and bronze in Light Continuous Sparring and Point Sparring. It is worth noting that Team Sparring involved mixed teams assembled on the day, with Jersey’s competitors joining martial artists from other clubs.

## Leadership on and off the Mat

The championships began with seminars led by senior instructors from across the IKKA before concluding with a further day of training. Jersey chief instructor Roy MacDonald BEM, a 10th Dan black belt, was invited to join the international teaching panel, leading an adult seminar and the Black Belt Master Class, and also serving as a senior judge during the championships. The squad was coached throughout the competition by head instructor Ray Molloy, a 5th Dan black belt.

MacDonald said he could not be prouder of every one of his students. “To come home with 35 medals and a trophy from a European Championships is a tremendous achievement for a small island club, and it’s a credit to the hard work they and their families put in all year round,” he said, also recognising Molloy’s contribution.

Molloy echoed the sentiment, praising not just individual performances but the team spirit shown throughout. “What stood out to me most wasn’t just what they accomplished individually, but how we all pulled together as a team,” he said. “The biggest lesson I hope the kids take away is simple: believe in yourself, never give up, and remember you can achieve anything if you try.”

The Jersey Kenpo Karate Association is based at Oakfield Sports Stadium and welcomes new students of all ages. Further information is available at kenpojersey.co.uk.

## The NSFW Perspective

Ten competitors, 35 medals, one trophy and a venue that hosted the 2004 Olympics. Not bad for a club based at a sports stadium in a Channel Island with a population smaller than most European cities’ suburbs. While larger nations were presumably fielding squads measured in the dozens, Jersey quietly sent ten kids, nine of whom came home with podium finishes. There is something deeply satisfying about that. The IKKA Europe has been promoting the discipline across Europe since 1984, and on this evidence, Jersey has been paying attention. One suspects the trophy for most medals relative to team size will be finding a very prominent spot on the shelf at Oakfield.
