# 20,000 books sold at Trinity farm to fund Jersey guide dogs

**In brief:** Guide Dogs Jersey’s 32nd annual Biggest Book Sale has raised £18,000 for the charity, with nearly 80 volunteers helping to shift around 20,000 second-hand books over two days at Peacock Farm in Trinity. The event has now raised more than £615,000 in total since its first outing in 1994.

## A well-thumbed success story

The numbers are hard to argue with. Around 20,000 second-hand books, two days, nearly 80 volunteers, and £18,000 raised for a cause that quite literally changes lives. Guide Dogs Jersey’s Biggest Book Sale, held on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October at Peacock Farm on La Route de Maufant in Trinity, has once again proved that the humble paperback still has plenty of pulling power.

Bailiwick Express reports that the sale offered everything from fiction and reference titles to rare and collectable volumes for the more discerning bibliophile. A dedicated children’s section kept younger visitors busy, with books priced at a very reasonable 25p each. Attendees could also meet Jersey’s working guide dogs and puppies in training, which, let’s be honest, may have been the real draw for a fair portion of the crowd.

Organisers noted that the empty boxes left behind told the story of the weekend rather eloquently. They thanked everyone who donated or purchased books, and gave a particular mention to Albert Bartlett for making its large store at Peacock Farm available to the charity.

## Thirty-two years and still going strong

Context makes the achievement even more impressive. When the very first Biggest Book Sale was held at Trinity Parish Hall in 1994, it raised £4,829. That was no small sum for a community fundraiser, but it is a fraction of what the event now generates. Over its 32-year history, the sale has raised a cumulative total of £615,402, with only one gap in the record: 2020, when the pandemic put paid to the event along with so much else.

This year’s result also sits within a broader fundraising picture for Guide Dogs Jersey. Three additional specialist book sales held earlier in 2026 at St Ouen’s Parish Hall raised £8,323 before the main event. Last year, four sales combined raised £28,345. The charity clearly knows what it is doing, and the island’s readers are clearly happy to play their part.

“The end result is to provide a Guide Dog that will change someone’s life,” the organising team said, which is about as good a summary of a charity’s purpose as you are likely to find.

## Volunteers: the unsung heroes

Events like this do not run themselves. The nearly 80 helpers who turned out to transport books, set up the venue, serve shoppers and clear everything away afterwards represent the kind of community spirit that Jersey does rather well. It is unglamorous work, and it is exactly what makes the difference between a good idea and a successful fundraiser.

The scale of the logistical operation, moving and sorting 20,000 books across a large farm store, is worth pausing to appreciate. That is not a weekend project for the faint-hearted, and the volunteers who make it happen year after year deserve considerable credit.

## The NSFW Perspective

In an age when we are constantly told that physical media is dying and that everyone has migrated to screens, there is something quietly satisfying about 20,000 second-hand books flying off the shelves in a farm store in Trinity. No algorithm, no subscription fee, no battery required. Just good books, reasonable prices, and a community that showed up. Jersey has a long tradition of punching above its weight when it comes to voluntary effort, and the Guide Dogs Jersey book sale is a fine example of exactly that. Here is to the 33rd.
