# Renovated Jersey court honours player who died during inter-island match

**In brief:** A renovated basketball court at Millennium Park in St Helier has been dedicated to Guillaume Hoareau, who died in May 2024 after collapsing during a match. The Guillaume Memorial Court, known as The G Court, was developed through a partnership between the Government of Jersey and the Jersey Basketball Association. Its colour scheme honours Hoareau’s roots on the French island of Réunion.

## A Court Reborn, a Legacy Preserved

There are memorials, and then there are memorials you can actually use. The G Court, formally the Guillaume Memorial Court, falls firmly into the latter category. Situated at Millennium Park in St Helier, the newly renovated basketball court was officially opened on 31 October, the BBC reports, as a permanent tribute to a man who gave a great deal to the sport on the island.

The redevelopment came about through a partnership between the Government of Jersey and the Jersey Basketball Association. The government described the finished facility as a “high quality community facility” for the island, one that doubles as a lasting tribute to Guillaume Hoareau.

## The Man Behind the Memorial

Guillaume Hoareau was 40 years old when he collapsed mid-game in May 2024, while playing for Jersey against Guernsey at Fort Regent. He did not survive. An inquest subsequently found that Hoareau had a heart condition called left dominant arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, a condition that can lead to sudden cardiac death.

Beyond his playing career, Hoareau was a basketball coach who worked with Jersey’s youth teams, meaning his influence extended well beyond his own performances on the court. He had come to Jersey from Réunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, and the design of The G Court reflects that heritage directly: the court’s colour scheme matches the flag of Réunion.

Paul Milbank, president of the Jersey Basketball Association, said: “The G Court is a lasting tribute to Guillaume and everything he gave to basketball and to Jersey.”

## Community Sport, Community Memory

The renovation represents a thoughtful way to honour someone whose contribution to Jersey basketball was both on and off the court. Youth players who were coached by Hoareau will now be able to play on a surface that bears his name and reflects where he came from. That is a rather elegant way to keep a person’s story alive in a community.

The court at Millennium Park is a well-used public space in St Helier, meaning The G Court is not tucked away as a quiet monument but sits in the heart of everyday island life, exactly where a man like Hoareau, who spent his time coaching young people and competing at inter-island level, would probably have wanted it.

## The NSFW Perspective

It is worth pausing on what this story actually represents. Jersey is a small island, and when someone contributes to its sporting and community life the way Guillaume Hoareau did, coaching youth teams and competing for Jersey against its neighbours, his loss is felt personally by a great many people. The decision to renovate a court rather than simply erect a plaque is a practical and fitting tribute: a living space for the sport he loved, used daily by the next generation he helped to nurture. The Réunion flag colour scheme is a particularly nice touch, acknowledging that Jersey is richer for the people who choose to make it their home. Well done to everyone involved.
