# JCG students and Rotarians raise £1,200 in pre-loved fashion show

**In brief:** A pre-loved fashion show jointly organised by two Jersey Rotary clubs has raised more than £1,200 for Autism Jersey and the Good Companions Club. Students from Jersey College for Girls modelled upcycled outfits alongside their own original creations, with Rotarians joining them on the catwalk.

## Charity, Catwalk and Creativity

It is not every fundraiser that sends Rotarians down a catwalk, but that is precisely what happened earlier this month when the Rotary Club of Jersey and Rotary Club de la Manche joined forces for a pre-loved fashion show that managed to be stylish, sustainable and genuinely useful, all at once.

The event, reported by Bailiwick Express, raised more than £1,200 for two local charities: Autism Jersey, which supports autistic people and their families across the Island, and the Good Companions Club, which provides friendship and activities for older people to help reduce isolation. Both organisations also had their charity shop stock featured on the catwalk, giving the garments a rather more glamorous outing than the average Tuesday morning browse.

## Students Take Centre Stage

Fashion and textiles students from Jersey College for Girls were the stars of the show, modelling pre-loved outfits as well as their own original creations, made by transforming previously worn garments using a range of textile and fashion techniques. Supported by their teacher Bianca Padidar, the students demonstrated that existing clothing can be reworked into something genuinely new, which is a considerably more impressive skill than simply buying something off a rail.

Organisers dressed the venue with seasonal decorations, plants and garlands, while local businesses contributed materials, gifts and raffle prizes. The combination of autumn fashion, student talent and community spirit clearly struck a chord with attendees.

## An Idea Worth Sharing

The inspiration for the event came from across the water. Last year, members of the Rotary Club of Shepperton and Sunbury visited Jersey and shared their experience of staging a similar fashion fundraiser. The two Jersey clubs took the idea, made it their own, and delivered something that brought together students, charities, local businesses and members of the community under one roof.

Madeleine de la Cour, who helped organise the event, said simply: “The fashion show was a great success.” Dr Effie Liakopoulou of the Rotary Club of Jersey was rather more expansive, describing it as “a celebration of young talent, sustainable fashion, collaboration and fellowship.” She added, with a neat sense of Rotarian philosophy: “Perhaps the best lesson of the evening was a simple one: sometimes a good Rotary idea deserves to be preloved too, shared, reimagined and given a new life somewhere else.”

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly encouraging about a story in which two volunteer organisations, a group of schoolgirls and a handful of local businesses get together, raise over £1,200 for good causes, and manage to make the whole thing look good in the process. No government grant application, no steering committee, no consultants charging by the hour. Just people with a good idea, borrowed from friends, and the energy to make it happen. Jersey’s voluntary sector does a remarkable amount of heavy lifting for the Island’s most vulnerable residents, and events like this are a timely reminder of what community actually looks like when it is left to get on with things.
