# Stranger punched five times at Jersey taxi rank gets probation

**In brief:** A man has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service and nine months of probation after pleading guilty to punching another man five times at the Weighbridge taxi rank in August. The Magistrate’s Court heard the assault was entirely unprovoked, with CCTV capturing the incident in full.

## What Happened at the Weighbridge

According to the Jersey Evening Post, the incident took place on 5 August at the Weighbridge taxi rank. Mark Edward Davis had been arguing with a man and a woman at the rank when he turned to a bystander and demanded: “What the f*** are you looking at?” When the man calmly questioned why Davis was being aggressive, Davis punched him five times in the face.

The victim attempted to walk away, but Davis followed him through the taxi rank towards Liberation Square, continuing to behave aggressively. The victim sustained bruising and swelling above his eye, as well as a small abrasion.

## The Sentence

Davis pleaded guilty to common assault in the Magistrate’s Court this week. Magistrate David Cadin, presiding, described the footage as showing an “unprovoked assault” for which there was “no excuse.” Davis was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and placed on probation for nine months.

The court also heard that Davis had 25 hours remaining on an existing community-service order at the time of sentencing, meaning this was not his first encounter with the justice system.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something particularly grim about an assault that begins with the most clichéd of confrontational questions, “What are you looking at?”, directed at a man who, by all accounts, was simply minding his own business at a taxi rank. The Weighbridge is one of the most central and well-lit spots in St Helier, and CCTV coverage clearly did its job here. Whether the sentence will do its job is, of course, another matter entirely. One hundred hours of community service and nine months of probation for five punches to the face of a stranger, delivered without provocation, is the kind of outcome that leaves many ordinary Jersey residents wondering whether the punishment truly fits the crime. Still, a guilty plea, a clear record on camera, and a magistrate who called it exactly what it was: at least the system got that part right.
