# Ellie Grant sets three Island Junior Records at Tigers open meet

**In brief:** Ellie Grant set three Island Junior Records at Tigers Swimming Club’s 45th annual open meet at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, despite stormy weather disrupting travel to Jersey over the weekend. More than 100 competitors took part across two days of racing, with visiting clubs from Guernsey and mainland England joining both Jersey clubs for the annual event.

## Grant Makes Her Mark in Style

If you were looking for an early-season statement of intent, Ellie Grant delivered it with some authority. The 15-year-old set new Island Junior Records in the 50m backstroke, 100m individual medley and 50m freestyle at Les Quennevais Sports Centre, according to the Jersey Evening Post. Three records in a single meet is the kind of performance that tends to get people talking, and rightly so.

Grant was not done there either. She went on to claim the senior girls’ Skins title in the prize-money elimination races that rounded off the weekend, finishing ahead of Niamh Church. It was, by any measure, a thoroughly dominant weekend’s work.

## Storm Clouds, Silver Linings

The weather did its best to spoil the party. Stormy conditions over the weekend prevented a number of visiting swimmers from making it to the Island, which is never ideal for a meet of this scale. That said, more than 100 competitors still took part, which speaks well of the organisers’ determination to press on.

Tigers head coach Nathan Jegou was philosophical about the disruption. “It was a great weekend, and we’re extremely grateful we managed to hold it with so many unable to make it over due to the storm,” he told the Jersey Evening Post. “We were rewarded with some superb swimming, from the 10-year-olds all the way to the senior age groups.”

Visiting clubs included Guernsey, Havant and Waterlooville, Huntingdon Piranhas and City of Peterborough, all of whom joined both Jersey clubs for the occasion. The fact that clubs from as far afield as Peterborough make the trip to Les Quennevais each year is a testament to the meet’s reputation.

## Skins, Personal Bests and Island Games Pathways

Beyond Grant’s record-breaking exploits, the weekend produced a healthy crop of notable performances. Jack Militis, Elsa Dodds, Hannah Sterry and Tom Sterry all caught the eye, as did Jersey Swimming Club’s young prospect Penny Wilson.

Jegou was particularly encouraged by what the meet means for the season ahead. “Some of those on the Island Games pathway got to put some times on the board, while we also collected a host of personal bests, county qualifying times and some just rewards for a really good start to training for the new season,” he said.

With the Island Games and Youth Commonwealth Games on the horizon, those early markers matter. The Skins events, which close the weekend with a series of elimination races, produced their own drama. Ella Baker claimed the junior girls’ title, holding off Tigers club-mate Vicky Grant, while Archie Paris won the junior boys’ competition ahead of George Church. Jack Militis completed the senior double for Tigers in the boys’ event, edging out Tom Sterry, who pushed him hard throughout.

The next major fixture for Jersey’s swimmers will be the Channel Islands Championships, also scheduled to take place at Les Quennevais in November.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly impressive about a club celebrating its 45th annual open meet and still producing the kind of performances that make you sit up and take notice. Tigers Swimming Club has clearly been doing something right for four and a half decades. Ellie Grant setting three Island Junior Records at 15, in early season, in a storm-disrupted meet, is the sort of detail that tends to appear in retrospective profiles of successful sporting careers. Whether that comes to pass remains to be seen, but for now, Jersey’s swimming community has every reason to feel optimistic heading into the Channel Islands Championships next month.
