# East 17 star swaps after-show parties for early nights and nappies

**In brief:** East 17’s Terry Coldwell has spoken to Bailiwick Express ahead of the band’s first-ever Channel Islands performances, reflecting on life after 90s pop stardom. The veteran boyband member, now a hands-on father, says the wild days are firmly behind him, though the gigs very much are not. Jersey fans can catch the band at The Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier on 12 December 2026.

## From Screaming Fans to Screaming Babies

There was a time when East 17 were the kind of act that made teenagers lose their minds and their hearing. These days, Terry Coldwell is more likely to be losing sleep over a toddler in a cot bed than a raucous after-show party. The boyband star, who joined East 17 at just 16 and had a record deal by 17, told Bailiwick Express that his priorities have shifted rather dramatically since the group’s commercial peak.

“At home in the week, I’m changing nappies and doing stuff like that,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of kids, and they keep you grounded. I’m Dad in the week, and then most weekends I’m travelling around with my mates doing what I love.”

What he loves, it turns out, also includes a decent night’s sleep. Asked what he most looks forward to on tour, Coldwell was refreshingly honest: “I always say this to the guys: I can’t wait to get in bed!” He even reportedly asked a promoter for a pillow after a long weekend of travelling. The promoter, apparently accustomed to more extravagant rider demands, was somewhat taken aback.

## Self-Managed, Self-Driven, Still Going Strong

What makes East 17’s current operation particularly striking is its stripped-back nature. According to Coldwell, the band manages itself, handles its own bookings, and even does its own driving. “It’s literally just the three of us, and that’s it,” he told Bailiwick Express. “We work hard, and even if we’re not well, we don’t want to let each other or the promoters down.”

It is a far cry from the bloated entourages and label machinery of the 90s pop era, and Coldwell seems genuinely proud of the leaner model. The last 14 years, he says, have been an upward trajectory after what he describes as a rollercoaster career. Watching the television programme *The Big Reunion*, he recognised the familiar arc: “Every band’s got the same story. You start out close, then you fall out.” He is philosophical about the original line-up’s fractured relationships, noting there is “a lot of water under the bridge” but adding he has not got a bad thing to say about the career overall.

The band’s touring schedule has taken them to some genuinely unexpected corners of the globe. Coldwell has visited Mongolia three times, on the first occasion staying in the president’s winter residence, complete with soldiers saluting the car at the gates. He has also recently returned from Uzbekistan, reached after 16 to 18 hours of travel due to routing around Russian airspace, and was sufficiently charmed by the place to joke that he would consider moving there if it were not quite so far away.

## Channel Islands Debut: Guernsey First, Then Jersey

The Channel Islands performances will be the band’s first in the islands. Bailiwick Express reports that East 17 will headline a Day Disco at Follies nightclub in St Peter Port, Guernsey, on Saturday 7 November, running from 15:00 to 20:30. Jersey’s turn comes on Saturday 12 December 2026, when the band brings its biggest hits to The Royal Yacht Hotel in St Helier, from 16:00 to 21:00. Both are over-30s events and will also feature guest DJs playing 80s and 90s hits. Tickets for both shows are priced at £41.50.

Coldwell admitted he has never visited the Channel Islands before and said he is genuinely looking forward to it. He drew a comparison with the Faroe Islands, another destination he had not anticipated, which he described as reminiscent of *Jurassic Park* and “the most stunning place ever,” complete with waterfalls down the mountains and every conceivable type of weather within a single 24-hour period.

As for advice to his younger self, Coldwell kept it practical: look after yourself better, get a good accountant from the very start of any music career, and, with characteristic candour, “don’t get married.” He was quick to add the more conventional wisdom too: have fun, and don’t take life too seriously.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something quietly admirable about a 90s pop act that has dispensed with the management, the label, the entourage and the delusion, and is simply three blokes booking their own gigs, driving themselves there, and asking for a pillow. East 17 were never quite the critical darlings that some of their contemporaries were, but longevity has a way of settling those old arguments. Jersey audiences of a certain vintage will no doubt be dusting off their best 90s nostalgia for December. Just perhaps leave the patchwork quilt outfit at home.
