## Where the money goes

Social Protection is the biggest area of spending at £596m in 2025, 32% of the total. Spending is grouped by what it is for, using the international COFOG classification, so it includes money spent through funds and arm's-length bodies as well as government departments.

## Public sector jobs

In December 2025 the core public sector employed 8,870 people, or 9,950 including other public bodies, against 5,970 in December 1998. That is a rise of 49%, while private sector jobs rose 23%.

## Income and spending in the States accounts

The States accounts table on the open data portal runs to 2022. In that year general revenue income was £1,028m and revenue spending £873m.
