## How many people live in Jersey

Jersey had 104,489 residents at the end of 2025, 16,089 more than in 2000. The population fell slightly in 2025.

## Where people live

St Helier holds 39% of the island's households, according to the 2021 Census. Home ownership is highest in the country parishes.

*Chart: Share of households owning their home, 2021 Census (see the data tables and CSV download)*

## Births and deaths

708 babies were born in 2025, the fewest in the series, and 905 people died. Deaths now outnumber births, so any growth in the population has to come from migration.

*Chart: Births and deaths, 2011 to 2025 (see the data tables and CSV download)*

## Arrivals and departures

3,616 people moved to Jersey in 2025 and 3,435 left, a net gain of 182.

## Residential status

Jersey's Control of Housing and Work Law gives residents a status that decides where they may live and work. Most arrivals start as Registered, with no right to buy or rent most homes; the Entitled population shrinks through migration because more qualified residents leave than arrive.

*Chart: Population by residential status, end of 2025 (see the data tables and CSV download)*

*Chart: Who arrived in 2025, by status (see the data tables and CSV download)*

**Population and migration by residential status, 2025**

| Status | Population | Arrived | Left | Net |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Entitled (full housing rights) | 74,720 | 660 | 1,430 | −770 |
| Entitled for work | 5,840 | 410 | 340 | +70 |
| Licensed | 3,440 | 570 | 280 | +300 |
| Registered (no housing or work rights yet) | 5,270 | 1,590 | 1,110 | +480 |
| Children under 16 | 15,220 | 390 | 270 | +110 |

Statistics Jersey rounds the figures by status and nationality to the nearest 10, so they do not add exactly to the totals above.

**Adults by nationality group, 2025**

| Nationality | Population | Arrived | Left | Net |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| European | 15,240 | 390 | 720 | −330 |
| Jersey or British | 68,440 | 1,810 | 1,910 | −100 |
| Non-European | 5,590 | 1,030 | 540 | +500 |

## An ageing island

*Chart: Change in population by age, 2017 to 2025 (see the data tables and CSV download)*

**Population by age**

| Age | 2017 | 2025 | Change |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Under 16 | 16,620 | 15,220 | -8.4% |
| 16 to 39 | 31,160 | 29,180 | -6.4% |
| 40 to 64 | 37,390 | 38,890 | +4.0% |
| 65 to 79 | 12,820 | 15,350 | +19.7% |
| 80 and over | 4,810 | 5,850 | +21.6% |

## Projections to 2080

Statistics Jersey projects the population under different levels of net migration. With no net migration the island would shrink to about 71,000 by 2080; with net migration of 800 a year it would grow to about 122,000.
