# Buddhist monks and Thai culture come to Jersey’s Town Hall

**In brief:** A Thai-Jersey Community Gathering is taking place at St Helier’s Town Hall, hosted by the Thai Language & Culture Centre. The event runs from 9.30am to 1pm and includes four Buddhist monks among its attendees. It is open to people of all faiths and none.

## Bringing Two Communities Together

Jersey’s Town Hall is playing host to a cultural exchange event designed to strengthen ties between the island’s Thai and local communities. The gathering, organised by the Thai Language & Culture Centre, brings together language learning, cultural exchange and education under one roof, and Bailiwick Express reports it is open to everyone regardless of background or belief.

Four Buddhist monks are among those attending, lending the occasion a spiritual dimension that sits alongside its practical goals of community building and mutual understanding. It is a reminder that Jersey, for all its compact size, is home to a genuinely diverse population with roots stretching well beyond the Channel.

## The Vision Behind the Event

Organiser Dararat Lorimer described the event’s ambitions in straightforward terms. “We recognise the importance of moral education and honour, outstanding contributions to lasting world peace, social service and human development,” she said. “We are dedicated to promoting peace and advocating good governance.”

Ms Lorimer went further, setting out a longer-term educational mission: “Our goal is to build an education bridge for future generations, connecting the Thai and Jersey and all communities through language learning, cultural exchange, education and wellbeing.”

The Thai Language & Culture Centre has also signalled an interest in working with schools, community organisations and public institutions across the island. Ms Lorimer said the organisation welcomes “opportunities to work alongside schools, community organisations and public institutions in Jersey and beyond, building partnerships that encourage mutual understanding, compassion and friendship.”

## Why It Matters for Jersey

Events like this one reflect something genuinely positive about island life: the ability of a small community to punch above its weight in cultural richness. Jersey’s Thai community, like many of the island’s resident groups, contributes quietly and consistently to the social fabric, and occasions that bring different communities into the same room, around shared interests in language and culture, tend to do more lasting good than any number of official initiatives.

The choice of the Town Hall as a venue is also notable. It signals a degree of civic recognition for the event, and for the community behind it, that goes beyond a simple booking arrangement.

## The NSFW Perspective

There is something refreshingly straightforward about this kind of event. No grand strategy documents, no six-figure consultancy fees, no ministerial press releases. Just a group of people who want to share their language, their culture and, apparently, the company of four Buddhist monks with their neighbours. Jersey could do with more of that spirit. The monks, one suspects, will bring considerably more wisdom to the Town Hall than it usually sees on a Thursday morning.
